Frequently asked questions
What encryption standard is used?
256-bit AES via qpdf, the same encryption standard used by Acrobat and other major PDF tools.
What happens if I forget the password?
We can't recover it. The password is never stored, so keep a copy somewhere safe. Lose it, and the file is unrecoverable.
Can I remove the password later?
Use our Unlock PDF tool with the same password. If you remember it, the protection comes off in seconds.
Can I restrict printing or copying without setting an open password?
Not currently. The tool sets a single password that controls opening the file. Permission-level restrictions, like print-only or no-copy, are on our roadmap.
Does the password work in all PDF readers?
256-bit AES is supported in Adobe Acrobat, Chrome's PDF viewer, Preview on Mac, and all major PDF apps.
Do I need to sign up?
No account required. Guests get one encryption per day; free accounts get 10.
Is there a file size limit?
50 MB per file.
Is my file safe?
Your file is processed in memory and deleted the moment your download starts. The password is never stored.
