Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know the password?

You need the password to unlock it. We remove the protection using the password you provide; we don't crack or brute-force anything.

Can you recover a forgotten PDF password?

No. Password recovery isn't something we offer. If you've forgotten it, the file is unrecoverable through this tool.

What if the password is wrong?

You'll see an error message. Double-check for caps lock, spaces, or special characters and try again.

Does it work with all types of PDF encryption?

We use qpdf, which handles all standard PDF encryption: 40-bit RC4, 128-bit RC4, and 128/256-bit AES. Most password-protected PDFs use one of these.

What's the difference between unlocking and decrypting?

Same thing in this context. Unlocking removes the password requirement so the file opens without one.

Do I need to sign up?

No account required. Guests get one unlock per day; free accounts get 10.

Is there a file size limit?

50 MB per file.

Is my file safe?

Your file is processed in memory and deleted the moment your download starts. The password is never stored.
